ECHOES OF RCImpact

Casting Concrete

The project RCImpact has ended on August 2012, but research on the impact behavior of reinforced concrete slabs continues. Eight new slab specimens, containing shear reinforcement and steel fibres in addition to the regular reinforcing bars, were cast to be tested under impact loads. These tests will expand our knowledge on the shear mechanisms involved in the impact behavior of reinforced concrete elements. Tests are planned to commence in the spring of 2013.

IMPACT TESTING FACILITY

New Impact Testing Facility at the Structural Laboratory of Izmir Institute of Technology is finally up and running! The test setup is designed to test reinforced concrete slabs under impacts of free falling drop-weights. Accompanying the test setup, a high-speed data acquisition system and a high-speed camera helps to capture displacements, accelerations, support reactions and strains on reinforcing bars.

Test setup was built with the funding received from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme [FP7/2007-2013] under grant agreement n° 211092 (Project RCImpact).

Below are videos of some impact tests recorded with a high-speed camera.

WASON MEDAL FOR MOST MERITORIOUS PAPER - 2011

Selcuk Saatci and Frank Vecchio were awarded the Wason Medal for Most Meritorious Paper by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) at the annual spring convention in Tampa in April 2011. The medal was given in recognition of the ACI Structural Journal article entitled ‘Effects of Shear Mechanisms on Impact Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Beams’, a paper which presents the details and findings from a comprehensive series of tests performed on large-scale beam specimens subjected to impact loads.

The Wason Medal for Most Meritorious Paper was founded in 1917 by Leonard C. Wason, Past President of the American Concrete Institute, and has been awarded continuously since that date. It is awarded each year to the author or authors of the most meritorious paper published by the Institute.  More information can be found on ACI website.
