Project Outline

Tasks to be Carried out for ME101 Term Projects:

Project:

Ceramic tile manufacture from IYTE campus raw materials

Supervisor:

Asst Prof. Dr. Sedat Akkurt

Objectives:

To learn the process of granulation, dry pressing and/or slip casting through the use of an in-house developed raw material recipe. To develop the teamwork skills to produce an end product. To learn delivering a professional quality seminar to inform classmates about the details of the project.

Methodology:

The project will consist of three main parts.

Report I.

Do a literature survey as to how the process of tile manýfacture works. Build your knowledge of the

process details through books, journals, manuals, web pages, etc.

Write a 3-page report that should contain the following:

1) Title of the project

2) Name of the student

3) An introduction

4) Literature review of the tile manufacture process.

5) Proposed work outline

6) References used in preparing the report.

This report should be turned in on November 7th, 2003.

Report II.

Contact Ms. Meral Budak (498-6612) to obtain the raw materials for tile manufacture. Locate each raw material so that you can initiate the project at any time.

Materials needed:

  1. 2 kg of Guneydere material

  2. 1 kg of Clay 261

  3. 1 kg of quartz

  4. 10 g of Na2SiO3 (water-glass)

  5. 1 kg Glaze mix

  6. Scoops, spatulas, knife, sponge, soap, vaseline, paper tissue, stainless steel pans etc.

Equipment needed:

  1. Variable speed blade mixer (Akkurt Lab)

  2. Hydraulic press (Guden Lab)

  3. Water spray (Camsil)

  4. Mechanical testing machine (IYTE-MAM)

  5. Ceramic firing kiln (Akkurt Lab)

Prepare a stable suspension from the raw materials by milling them in a ball mill with alubit grinding media. Let the suspension dry in a pan in an oven overnight. Break the fragments of powder fine enough to pass 100 mesh in mortar and pestle. Spray distilled water on the powder in a pan. Sieve the granules so formed and press them into tile shape. Write a report that explains the procedure used in preparing the

    1. Slip,

    2. Granules,

    3. The pressed tile.

The report should have a similar format to Report I and should be turned in before November 21st, 2003.

Report III.

Do the following

    1. Place the dried pieces into the firing kiln and program the kiln to

    2. heat the ware up to 1100-1200oC for 1 hour.

    3. Remove the cooled piece from the kiln and coat it with a thin layer of glaze by spraying.

    4. Dry the glaze and fire the piece again at 1000oC for 1 hour.

    5. Now you have the end-product, "The IYTE Tile". Write a report of the work you have done and turn it over to me before December 5th, 2003.

Write a final report about the whole project (3-5 pages typed in computer) and submit it before

January 2nd, 2004. The report must be free from any form of plagiarism.

Prepare your powerpoint presentations explaining the project. Practice, practice and practice your presentations.  Present your work to your class-mates on January 9th, 2004. Enjoy the tiles....

If you have any questions during the project please do not hesitate to contact me.

Good Luck!
