Diffusion and Phase Equilibria in Polymer –Solvent Systems

    My research interests are mainly focused on the study of phase equilibria and diffusion behavior in polymer-solvent systems.  In the experimental study of phase equilibria and diffusion behaviour in polymer-solvent systems,    I mostly focus on the development on the improved measurement techniques and prediction methods.  The thermodynamic and diffusion theories are used to provide the practicing engineer with the most efficient and accurate methods to deal with important problems involving phase equilibria and diffusion.

   Chromatographic and gravimetric techniques are being extensively used to examine both solubility and the diffusivity of solvents in polymers.  In the case of vapor-liquid equilibria, inverse gas chromatography is used to determine both the partitioning of the solvent between the two phases and the diffusivity of the solvent into the polymer. In this method, the polymer (the liquid phase) is coated on the inner walls of a capillary chromatographic column and pulses of solvent (the vapour phase) are injected into the column. By carefully modelling the response of the column, the thermodynamic and mass transfer parameters can be obtained. In the past this method has been primarily used to measure systems with only an infinitely small amount of a single solvent. The extension of the method to higher concentrations of solvent is done. The obtained data are used to develop and improve the models for correlation and prediction of diffusion coefficients.  The dominant method in this area has been Vrentas-Duda free volume theory.

 

Processing and Characterization of Polymer Based Composites

    In recent years, polymer composite materials have attracted considerable interest as the materials and/or alternative materials to be used in aerospace, automobile, biomedical and sporting good industries. Currently there are various methods used in preparation and studying polymer matrix composites. Generally, the structure of these materials is owing to the preparative procedure and also significantly affects their properties. The most common method in thermoplastic polymer composite preparation is the usage of extruder or plastograph.  Also the type of the filler used in the polymer matrix such as calcium carbonate, talc, chalk, kaolin, mica, zeolite, and silica, affects the composite properties. My activities on this research have always been  centered on the processing conditions, characterization,  and investigation of the effect of different fillers on the properties (thermal, flow and mechanical) of  thermoplastic polymer matrix composites.

 

Biopolymer and Composites Applications

    Bioabsorbable devices for load bearing applications, based on bioabsorbable polymer or composites can overcome some problems associated with metallic implants or devices applied in orthopaedics. These devices made of biodegradable polymers such as poly (L-lactide), poly (L-lactide co DL Lactide) copolymers are already in clinical use for the last twenty years. Mechanical properties of these polymers gradually reduce as they degrade, allowing loads to be transferred to the bone, therefore reducing stress shield effect. Although they have many advantages over metallic implants, the major drawn back of such resorbable polymers is that they have weak mechanical properties especially for the load bearing applications.  Recently hydroxyapatite (HA) reinforced polylactide based composites have attracted great attention due to the favourable characteristics of HA which is expected to confer a bone bonding behaviour and to improve mechanical properties of these composites. In this project, the preparation and characterization of polylactide-Hydroxyapatite(HA) composite films for biomedical applications have been studied. The effects of number of parameters such as polymer type, HA loading, surface modification and its concentration on the mechanical and microstructural properties of the composites were investigated. In this project,  the hydrolytic degradation of poly (L-Lactide)(PLA), poly (L-Lactide-co-D-Lactide) (PDLA) and their hydroxyapatite (HA) loaded composites (10-40-w/w %) were also  investigated in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 0C and at pH 7.4 by in vitro static testing.
