The Foreign Language Teaching Faculty

Tuition in all the above named faculties being in English, the Foreign Language
Teaching Department Preparatory School, usefully located in the centre of Izmir,
assumes a large responsibility at the Izmir Institute of Technology.

Within this friendly department, courses for EAP (English for Academic Purposes),
ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and EGP (English for General Purposes) have
been specially designed and are continually updated; all this in order to prepare
students for tasks they will be exposed to for the duration of their studies within their
chosen faculty.

Prospective undergraduate students should take the English Proficiency Exam which
is prepared by the Language Department and administered prior to the
commencement of the first academic term. Students satisfying the following criteria
may proceed directly to applying to their chosen faculty.

The International English Language Testing System

further details about these criteria and exemption from the Preparatory year.

Highly qualified language teaching staff, with a rich mixture of experience of overseas
posts, Post-graduate and Doctoral research train students to use resources effectively
whilst applying critical thought. Also encouraged is participation in academic
seminars, reading and writing in a variety of genre-specific contexts texts and
effective oral communication.

Tuition in English does not begin and end in the intensive preparatory year. The
courses ENG 101, 102 and 201 ensure that previously acquired skills are refined
during carefully designed faculty-specific language courses taught by language
teachers familiar with the work-related context in which undergraduates are studying.

Among many other attractive features the Foreign Language Teaching faculty boasts
not only a Testing and Assessment Department (TAD) but one devoted to Continuing
Professional Development (CPD). The TAD ensures that all students are assessed on
a valid and reliable basis, whilst the CPD, run by internationally recognised and
approved trainers, ensures all teachers are constantly adding to their already
considerable store of language teaching techniques.
