The Department of Mathematics at the Izmir Institute of Technology offers Graduate programs in both pure and applied mathematics designed primarily to prepare students for research and teaching in mathematics, and leading to the Master’s Degree in Mathematics in the areas of algebra, discrete mathematics, numerical analysis, and mathematical physics. Our faculty members have achieved international recognition for their research in the areas of homological algebra, module theory, nonlinear dynamics, integrable systems, non-commutative and non-linear mathematical physics. The research interests represented in the department span important areas of contemporary mathematics and its applications including differential geometry, differential equations, spectral theory, probabilistic analysis, logic, finite element method, scientific computation. Aided by graduate classes usually of no more than 10 students, we offer our students personal attention and close contact with the faculty. Students and faculty enjoy considerable interaction with other disciplines as physics, material science and engineering. The Master of Science degree comprises a thesis and a minimum 21 semester-credit hours of the Graduate Program Courses. Among them two core courses from the following list MATH 515 Real Analysis (3+0)3 MATH 516 Complex Analysis and Fluid Dynamics (3+0)3 MATH 517 Advanced Linear Algebra (3+0)3 MATH 519 Methods of Mathematical Physics (3+0)3 MATH 527 Basic Abstract Algebra (3+0)3 MATH 564 Functional Analysis (3+0)3 All new accepted students who didn’t pass the General Graduate Exam have to take two preparatory courses MATH 501 Advanced Mathematics (4+0)4 MATH 503 Introduction to Pure Mathematics (4+0)4
The Master’s Degree recipients generally suppose to take positions in education, industry and government, or continue Ph.D. studies in mathematical research.
