Following the mission of the Izmir Institute of Technology, our department emphasizes the role of research in architecture at different levels and in different fields. The department seeks new paths of interdisciplinary research in architecture with a primary concern in responding to challenges in urbanization and in built environment in Turkey.

MEC-Art/Architecture                                                                                                          MEC-ART Researchers are concerned with the potentials of kinetic designs in art and architecture; what they are, what they can do for us, and how we can go about designing them. We aim at proving the applicability of kinematic methods into the design process of the adaptable space organizations through the kinetic building parts. In order to achieve our aim, a new type of design approach must be derived with an interdisciplinary study between architecture and mechanical engineering.

Research on lighting issues in Building Physics:                                                       Studies about lighting are based on fundamentals of daylighting design, analysis, visual comfort issues and daylighting performance of buildings under the basic issues of building physics. In view of these ongoing researches, a laboratory was constructed to serve researchers by providing several measurement equipments and computer programs. Such devices, lighting meters, a luminance meter and a chroma meter, are currently available. The education method involves lectures with working assignments and practical exercises together with analysing research methods. The aim is to set a strong link with theory and practical problems.
