Project Term 2 years

The Aim, the Signaficance, and the Expected Outcomes of the Project:
One of the most effective methods of education is the participation of the student to the learning process in an active way and its enthusiasm in that direction. The use of computers can improve the quality and effectiveness of physics education in various ways. The use of computers in tutorials can make the study of the subject more attractive and the study habits of the students more systematic. The use of computers in labs can increase the motivation of the students to do the experiments and to improve the understanding of their data. Moreover this enables the students be free of unnecessary laboratory burdens. For example, the use of computers enable more precisious data like temperature, velocity data luminosity etc. The use of computers in lectures enables the lecturer to present figures and graphs in an exact and clearer form and enables to perform small animations and simulations to explain (especially experimental aspects of ) the physics behind the formula. By using computers each student can study the topic in accordance with his speed of learning and educational background. Hence there will be a significant improvement in success of the students.

Although there have been many research studıes and some applications at present there is still a long way to go. Especially in the areas of a better cooperation of simulation and real lab studies, full use of different present software possibilities (which usually cover only a part of the full curriculum and are scattered) and their better cooperation into the lecture and lab studies need further study. The accomplishment of this project will provide this university the opportunity to gain the frontier technologies and make additional contributions in the area of computer-aided physics education. This will help to bring Turkish universities to the frontiers in this area. It should be seen as one of the first attempts to allow them to gain and to make contributions to produce the newest technologies in this area. Moreover the results of this study can also been used to enhance the level of physics education in high schools through computer-aided teaching. In summary this project is important as one of the pioneering studies to enable Turkey to catch one of the leading technologies of tomorrow.

Research Matterial and Method

  1. In the first year of the project all necessary software, hardware, books and journals will be supplied.
  2. Then the necessary pictures and diagrams will be obtained and General Physics experiments will be recorded in avi or mpeg format by digital camera.
  3. In the next step the General Physics topicsis will be shared by the project personell and proposed scenarios will be discussed.
  4. The scenarios (which are agreed upon) will be carried to computer-aided platforms by using the matterial supplied in the context of the project.
  5. In the second year the project will be finalized by presenting the outcome present to students to test its impact. The evaulation of these tests will be presented in international and national scientific meetings and in journals.
  6. In future the results of these studies considered to be used in the context of distant education in national scale.
